Sylvester: “Mutual Attraction” Various BPM (CNR LP 634.026).

Sylvester has revealed in an interview that he would like to record a number of jazz songs. His latest album, the first for a major American record label, includes two beautiful jazzy ballads, “Summertime” (yes, that one) and “Cool of the Evening.” These tracks showcase a completely different side of him.

The rest of the material on the album is also quite different from what we are accustomed to. It leans more towards funk, a direction already hinted at with “Living for the City” and evident in the 12-inch single “Someone Like You” (BPM 123). A highlight is the title track, “Mutual Attraction,” with a BPM of 100, aligning with the style of artists like Change. It’s worth mentioning that the song was produced and written by Eric van Tijn and Jochem Fluitsma, two Dutch musicians who played a crucial role in the success of Mai Tai. Their international recognition is well-deserved.

While Sylvester’s longtime fans may find this album a departure from his earlier work, the new sound is likely to attract a substantial new following. The title track, “Mutual Attraction,” with its refreshing BPM and the involvement of acclaimed Dutch producers, marks a notable evolution in Sylvester’s musical journey.
