“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” by Iron Butterfly was a late-sixties classic, perfect for a significant journey into the realms of tripping. It was one of the first single-sided long songs. The drum solo, in particular, captured the imagination. New Yorker David van Tieghem is a drummer/percussionist by trade. In this capacity, he navigates the artistic avant-garde of New York, recently appearing on the latest album by Laurie Anderson.

In his version, the song has been significantly shortened, but the structure remains the same. The intro is relatively calm, with a subdued rhythm box and long, expansive synth sounds. From here, the rhythmic train slowly gains momentum, featuring a lot of percussion, whether electronic or not. Just before the abbreviated drum solo, the song takes a funky turn with Larry Saltzman’s guitar playing. The track may never become a dance floor hit, but in the early evening, it serves as a delightful warm-up.
