Midnight Star: “Engine no. 9” 124 BPM Elektra 12°’ 66828 USA Import) by Martin Jesserun

Once again, the third maxi-single from their successful album ‘Head-lines’. In contrast to the two predecessors, this time we have an uptempo chopping Funky/Soul-like track. The beat is driven by a heavy plucking bassline. Below lies a moderate percussion and synthesizer line, which in my opinion should have been placed more prominently in the mix by remixer Timmy Regisford. The lead vocals are monotonous, making it all quickly become tiresome and remain on the same level. Despite this not being their strongest record, Midnight Star remains underrated, which is entirely unjustified given their musical and vocal qualities.
