MAVIS STAPLES: “Time Waits for No One” Div. BPM (LP/CD Paisley Park, WEA)

Once again, old and new come together, though Mavis Staples herself isn’t quite old yet. However, The Staple Singers, known for their big hits in the ’70s and their rare grooves (“I’ll Take You There,” “Respect Yourself,” “Let’s Do It Again”), certainly are. Now, Mavis releases another solo album, this time on Prince’s label, and the Prince influence is unmistakable in the instrumentation. The single “20th Century Express” is already out, but tracks like “Come Home,” “Jaguar,” and “Train” are also noteworthy. Mavis’s soulful, gospel-tinged vocals blend beautifully with Prince’s carefully crafted sounds, making this album a must-have, especially with four of the eight tracks being danceable.
