HIPHOP BOOM

The number of new releases in rap and hip-hop is continuously growing. The successes in this genre are, of course, the direct cause: Billboard’s Top Black Albums list of May 13 had Slick Rick at 1, Tone Loc at 3, MC Hammer at 4, De La Soul at 5, Kid ‘n Play at 9, and NWA at 10. And with Guy at 2 and Bobby Brown at 6, you can definitely speak of a strong dominance. Too Short, Just Ice, Kwamé, Three Times Dope, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Special Ed, Oaktowns 3-5-7, and Rob Base are all rising in this album top 100, which once again makes it clear that rap and hip-hop are nowadays more focused on albums than on 12 inches. This is something we recently heard from Posdnous of De La Soul. More and more acts are debuting with an album straight away, and if they first appear with a 12-inch, the forthcoming album with title and number is always mentioned on it. Below are some new releases that no longer fit on the hip-hop review page:

Atmospheric with “Admit it” on Profile, King Sun with “On the club tip” on Zakia, CJ Snow with “Snowslide” on Sure Sound, NMC & ADJ with “Insane” on Nugroove, Three Times Dope with “Funky Dividends” on Arista, Marvelous JC & Unique Force with “Get real” on Insane Records, MC Twix with “Devastatin’ 2 yo’ ear” on IRS, Ace & Action with “Letter to the better” on Prism, Chubb Rock with “Ya bas chubbs” on Select, The Kings of Pressure with “Brains Unchained” on Next Plateau, and the album “Slang Teacher” on the same label, The Chosen Ones with the album “Enter the Lord” on Select, Black Radical MK II with “Monsoon” on the English 2 The Bone label, Heavey D & The Boys with the album “Big Tyme” and the fantastic 12-inch “We got our own thang” on MCA, The 7A3 with “Goes like dis” on Geffen, Big Daddy Kane finally on 12-inch with “Lean on me” remixed on Cold Chillin-England, and Toddy Tee with “I need a Rolex” on Cold Chillin. And then we haven’t even mentioned a lot of less good releases in this genre.
