COSMETIC: “So Tranquilizin'” (Gramavision 12″ 18-121001 Megadisc, CBS) 123 BPM
“In the Nightlife” was the last we heard from this group last year, that is, if you ever got to hear that track. The high tempo and the unconventional use of instruments made it challenging for DJs to program. So, there’s every reason to take a more accessible path this time, with the help of Jamaaladeen Tacuma (a bassist from the jazz world). And no one can deny that his production, thanks in part to the excellent mixing by Francois Kevorkian, is a success.
The groove is carried by solid synthesizer parts and a lively percussion line. The vocals are simple but, with the Emulator accents (So Hip, So Hip), whether you like it or not, will make your feet move. The bass (my favorite subject) is very crisp and tight, playing a crucial role in “So Tranquilizin’.” An incredibly strong uptempo track that you definitely shouldn’t overlook.
